This past March has been a very rough month for me skating-wise. I have been going to a lot of FS session and gradually building myself up to doing double runthrus of my program plus one of the other program.
One thing I know for sure... morning freestyle sessions are NOT great for me skating wise. Neither is lack of sleep these days and I'm facing a LOT of that as of late. (I figured that from not doing great in the mornings but doing GREAT programs later on in the afternoon or evenings.)
But the good part is that come April 2nd (well, the 3rd since I have a lesson with my primary coach that day...) when I start tampering off the workouts and the skating to allow my body the rest it needs to perform well on competition day. This is the last part of the periodization process!!! Now it does NOT mean that I totally slack off and not do any workout... I just have to be aware of overdoing it! My figure skating personal trainer specifically said "Yeah, go ahead and do cardio and stretching but don't go overboard with the weight training. You want to give your body a chance to recover." (Yup! Guilty as charged! I do push myself a lot and don't always give myself a chance to recover... not a good thing!!!)
Still a lot of prep work here. I just had a makeup application lesson so that I can put on my own makeup when I'm at Lake Placid, since I really can't assume that I will have a makeup artist there and my primary coach (who's also a hairdresser) ... well, I don't think makeup is one of his specialties. Have to check on some stuff so I know what to pack for the trip and what to leave at home. (I don't know what will be provided for me at the vacation home that I'm staying at for this trip.) I also have to figure out what stuff animals and other trickles to throw on the ice and to whom and label those items too. I also need to figure out my schedule so I can met and greet as many of my fellow skating buddies as possible. (A lot of these friends are LONG TIME net skating friends who I will finally meet in person for the first time!!! This is what I'm really looking forward to!!!) :-)
And speaking of sleep... ZZZZZZZzzzzz!!! :-)

BAAAAD boots, off ice axels, personal training
My feet are NOT happy campers right now!!!
... well, at least my left foot. The padding around the bones of the ankles of the boot have worn down to the point where it's hitting the ankle bones and it is QUITE painful to skate. I skate CW, so this is my picking foot, my landing foot AND my backspin foot. OW OW OW OW!!!! (Then again, it held up well for someone who's been skating regularly on them 4 times a week for 3 years...)
Can't take my boots to Harlick 'til Tuesday when they're back from this ISI comp in LA that they're at now. Meanwhile, I'm using some gel pads to cushion things a little bit, though it's still not that much help. Needless to say, my jumps aren't doing that great as of late. :-( I probably will be off ice for at least a week or two while they do the repairs, I'll bet. :(
But...better to get this done now than risk being injured right before Adult Nationals though... but I am kinda bummed b/c I was supposed to start on doing axels on ice.
Off ice axels
Meanwhile, I will have to wait 'til the gym is emptier (i.e. weekends) to continue doing off ice axels. Why? I want ramp up space to kick thru rotated and land and I don't want to end up crashing into people and/or gym equipment. The good news is that they are becoming HALF axels now -- from an overrotated waltz jump. This is PROGRESS!!! I am also doing a lot of jump and rotate exercises, trying to close my arms in (depending on who I talk to -- it's either "give myself a hug" or "give myself a Heimlich") and keeping my body straight throughout the jump. Now if I could get this right, I should have an off ice axels soon.
Speaking of which, most people look at me funny, but ONE guy actually smiled when I was doing them and asked "Axels?" I smiled back and said "Yes!!!") :-D
Personal Training and Fitness
Ballet Guy Trainer is finally settled training as an independent trainer... just in time for me to adjust my training sessions with him and my figure skating personal trainer. Ballet Guy trainer will now do half time personal training and half time getting me into more "dance therapy" stuff. I am addressing some issues with the placements of "knowing" where my arms and free leg are, how straight they are, etc. This should be fun, since I will get to do a bit of dancing and I LOVE to dance! (Doesn't MEAN I do WELL on it though... :-P ) We agree that figure skating trainer will also work me partly on being a personal trainer and partly on the off ice stuff that my skating coach doesn't have the time to work with me on (b/c she's working on my other jumps and spins and moves.) The figure skating personal trainer HAS an axel (on ice) so she should know what I'm up against in learning the off ice axels first and how it translates to ice. :-)
Probably is... since Ballet Guy Trainer left my fitness club, I'm now stuck with four personal training sessions! I am still contemplating on where I'll use it on. One thing I had thought about is taking "Black Belt Trainer" for kickboxing and get some self defense lessons. (Hey! A girl's gotta do what she's gotta to protect herself. Can't rely on hubby to always there there to beat up the bad guys... and I do take pleasure out of beating the crap out of the bad guys out there! LOL!!!) Problem is that "Black Belt Trainer" is no longer training at the current branch of my fitness club and I don't know if he will be willing to come back to it. I would have to go thru the arduous paperwork process of transferring my personal training credits towards switching to another branch. Now... I've been thru this with my former PT back at my old branch and I really don't want to go thru that again!!!
I do have a backup PT in mind now for this if "Black Belt Trainer" doesn't pan out. (I'll refer to this one as the "bald guy trainer" since hubby asked this past weekend "Hey! Where's the bald guy trainer you were telling me about?") Just got his business card. Has ACSM certs (SWEET! I don't run into too many ACSM guys out there!) Passed Test #1 and #2 on potential PT tests.
Yes, there are a couple of concerns. One of them is that he doesn't come off "low drama." Given my previous experience with a former personal trainer (I'll call him "Psycho Trainer"... long story here!), this is definitely deal breaker for me. I'm here to focus on my training for Adults Nationals and I'm already stressed as is and need to be calm and focused when I train out there on the ice AND on the gym floor.
Also... to be frank... I have two personal trainers already. I don't need to add a third one! I have LOTS of "People Power" behind Team Jazzpants now. It's one thing for me to take up "Black Belt Trainer" b/c I do need to learn about self-defense and how to beat up the scary punks out on the street if needed. But currently I don't know what this "bald guy trainer" can bring into the picture for me (aside from probably junk bond tips, the guy was in finance... :-P ) and whether or not those needs aren't already met by anyone in Team Jazzpants already. I think in a way, it's a matter of what "bald head trainer" can bring that's unique and is something I need. So far, I haven't seen it yet, which is why I'm NOT already training with him. (But I am keeping his business card in case something falls thru with one of my current trainers or if someone else needs a recommendation. I do like the guy and want to help the newbie out!)
Third thing... and this is bad for my gym... but I am opting to take my personal training OUTSIDE my fitness club and looking for independent PT's who do not answer to the fitness club's needs for profit and how to train clients. I want them to develop their own style of training and carve out their own niche! This is where true success comes from and where your "paper creds" becomes $$$.

More LUTZ stories and that EVIL four letter word...
Okay, so I have a lesson with my secondary coach, who has never seen me do a clean lutz. I managed to land a couple of relatively cheated ones. She made a few "adjustements" and I've managed to land some good ones and know when I'm not going to land a good one...
She said that she's proud of me for landing those lutz! They were good lutzes!!! Then she says "Well...I guess we're gonna start working on [here comes that EVIL four letter word]...the axels pretty soon, huh?" *evil grin* Panic sets in!!! (And for the record, secondary coach knows I'm panicky about starting on the axel. Primary coach thinks I'm a big CHICKEN and therefore STILL not ready to start on the axels yet.)
Though it's a nice realization that I've finally reached the point where I start working on that infamous axel jump an certain amount of dread starts getting me nervous. AND, of course, reading about Braden Overett's very nasty fall on his 3axel and the "recovering period" didn't help me in the confidence dept. either. I mean the only thing he has in his favor is that 1) he's young, 2) he's young, and 3) he's a well trained athlete. His waxel fall was a very common problem amongst skaters that are doing the axel and those falls from what I've hear are PAINFUL!!! And to make it EVILLE too... I don't know if this time I am allowed butt gel pads to work on this jump, b/c she doesn't believe in "coddling a student skater." I do know that I will be on the harness too.
Wish me luck... meanwhile I made sure my life insurance is paid up & all.
Crashing in bed... lack of sleep this morning! ZZZZZzzzzzzz....

Weight Loss/Maintanace Status: 2/2/2008
I had another visit to my dietitian. The maintenance is going well!
I've gained one pound from last month's but I didn't do a fat analysis since December b/c I went off my diet for Christmas. So my comparison is from early Dec. 2007. But my body fat % DROPPED! So apparently my weight gain is MUSCLE, not fat!!! (I was worried that I actually lost too much weight b/c my "old tighter" clothes are loose on me and my wedding band is practically falling off my ring finger. May have to resize the ring again...)
Here's the stat as of this afternoon:
2/2/2008
Weight: 122.2 lbs
BMI: 21.3
Fat %: 23.4%
Total Fat Mass: 28.61 lb (12/1/2007: 33.61 lb)
Muscle Mass: 93.61 lb (12/1/2007: 87.61 lb) <== I've gained 6 lbs of MUSCLES!!! :-D
And I am proud to say that my husband also has been losing weight and pretty much saved himself from being the next heart attack victim!!! Back about 6 months ago... he was walking on the treadmill for not more than 5 minutes before he gets this really bad back pain and would demand to go home or to eat at some place where he would NOT have to do much walking from the car to the restaurant. (And mind you, he's NOT walking very fast. I think he was going about 2.5 mph with no incline in fact.) These days, he's walking about 20-30 minutes. Still at 2.5 mph and no incline, but he's going a LOT longer than before! His shirt size also went from an XXL to an XL too!!!
Most important is that his MOTHER noticed the weight loss! This is good, b/c it shows her that I'm trying to take good care of her little boy. I won't have to deal with comment from her such as "Why aren't you taking good care of my son? He's WAAAAY overweight!!! You have to nag him some more to lose weight." (Ummm... he's a 43 year old grown man and CAN take care of himself??? Besides, nagging him would not work in this case. He had to want it for himself!!!)

Why you should NEVER tailgate a car...
Yesterday around 12:06pm, I was driving on Hwy 92 heading for Hwy 880 to a friend's home for a girls' day out. A HUGE truck right in front of me (about two car lengths) somehow blew its tires and ended up in a spin out right into a car either in front and/or to the right of him. Lucky for me, we were both in land 3 and there were no cars within 5 car lengths in lane 2, so I managed to quick switch to lane 2 and went right around the cars, avoiding a head on accident with them!!! =:-O Of course, the rest of the trip to my friends' home was quite nerve-wrecking.
I'm thankful that lane 2 was clear, that I do not tailgate and therefore had enough time to react by switching over to lane 2, and that I had very quick reflexes!!! Otherwise, I would not be writing to you in the comforts of my home. I would be in a hospital right now fighting for my life! I may not even be alive by now!!!
The moral of the story is... do NOT tailgate your drivers!!! There is a reason why the driving instructors always harp on you to keep 2 car lengths from the car in front of you!!!

Got to workout at a "posh" health club...
My current health club has some sort of a deal going with the more "upscale and posh" Club Sports. I never really thought to go to Club Sports since I don't live anywhere near any of their branches. However, today I was visiting my high school girlfriends for a "good day out" and trust me... with these fab friends, there's no such thing as "keeping a schedule." (Or "diet"... or "portion control" with these people!!! Let's put it another way: Answer to "Chocolate cake or cannolis?" question is "yes!" for them! LOL!!!) Anyway, I was hunting for the closest branch of my health club to go to and one of the friends mentioned something about Club Sports and I remembered that I have that deal going on with my health club that if I pay $10 a visit, I can get into the more posh Club Sports. What sealed the deal? It's only 10 minutes from my friend's home (as opposed to a half hour to the closest branch of my gym.)
This gym is more a resort type of place than an upscale fitness center. Great for those who want to have the "vacation" experience of working out at a gym. The hottub is in the locker rooms, which is great!!! (Unfortunately when I was there, it was CROWDED!!!) If you like to do racquetball, swimming or tennis this is the right place for 'ya! Even though the membership is expensive and the place is more upscale, this is NOT the place to meet rich people, as some of the club guests and members seemed to think! (In the SF area, the Olympic Club is where you meet rich people.)
I was thrilled to find something similar to a Total Body Gym, as well as kettleballs, Plyo boxes and slideboards -- something I don't see at my health club! (I got either funny looks or impressed looks on the slideboards. Members of the club gave me funny looks. The trainers and employees were impressed. LOL!!!) Also, lots of ellliptical trainers (most of them with TV's, but I aim for the onces without a TV... and for a good reason...) However, a couple of things missing for me: 1) Prowler, 2) weighted sled and 3) VertiMax Jump trainer!!! (I would love to have some training in jumping but floor jumping is BAD on my lower back.) :-(
Also, the vibe I get from this gym is that they're more a "resort" than a serious training gym. For this figure skater, it's slightly nerving given my work ethics b/c I want to feel like I'm really training towards a goal and seeing results. For instance, the concept of working out with a TV is great, especially if I am watching football or baseball playoffs or the news. HOWEVER, I would like to concentrate on my cardio session. I'd rather watch my heart rate monitor, how fast I'm going on the elliptical trainer given a certain resistance and be mindful of whather or not I'm pushing myself or not. I don't want to be one of those that mindlessly go on the ellptical trainer to put in my obligated half hour. I want to make the most of my time at the gym, so I'm able to deal with the stress of skating thru two 1:40 programs. (Given that, I still went for the jacuzzi!!! There's something to be said for loosening tight muscles after a hard workout too!!! It's called "recovery!!!" :-P )
There is also a Cafe/Lounge to eat foods and stuff, though it peeves me that it's NOT open in the evenings, which is usually when I work out. GRRRRR!!!
I like this gym and when I am visiting this friend's home again, I will try to make another visit there. BUT...I can't justify spending tons on membership at this place. I'll stay at my current health club for now and go with my independent personal trainers at other "personal training" gyms for training.

2007 achievements/goals for 2008 (skating)
I posted this on skatingforums.com on the "2007 Achievements/2008 thread" but I should put it here so I can track myself here too! Note that this was written as of early Dec 2007. I have a few comments in blue on the current status.
Achievements for 2007:
2008 Goals:
Achievements for 2007:
- Well, I'm happy to say that the first two goals are finally halfway getting there! I'm at least landing the flip and the loop a lot more often than before.
- Lutz: Well, I've landed one or two on a good day... including one just this past Thursday! But so far, it's still a pipe dream... (Side note: Not as much of a pipe dream now. I've been landing one or two of them a session. They're not great! They're probably royally cheated on the takeoff too or flutzed. But I am landing them CLEAN!!!)
- Camels are at least spinning consistently around at least a couple of revs and more like 3 revs. before I end up dropping back down to a scratch (or on bad days, it doesn't even get past 2 revs.) But it's definitely coming along!!! However, camel-sit is still a dream. I only get them a couple of times in the last six months.
- Skate faster and prettier... Hmmm? Well, I am faster. Prettier... is in the eyes of the beholder.
- ALL my coaches, including my NYC coach, thought that I'm skating faster and have more flow and confidences in my edges, FWIW. That's good to know.
- Silver Moves: Both primary and secondary coach started me on Silver Moves. Oh, dear! It's gonna be a BEAR getting that FO mohawk and the BI3's... (Forward power pulls are getting somewhere though... They're definitely starting to get there.) And if you have seen my artistic program video, my spirals are another big pleasant surprise this year. All that stretching at the gym... (Side Note: I have a heck of a time trying to get my spiral at hip level, especially when my lower back is bothering me. I do a lot of stretching at the gym in order to help me become more flexible. It's a VERY GOOD thing when I can get it at hip level.)
- Back sit spin: This is the surprise one! I actually am starting to get one. Albeit wimpy one and probably won't count on the Bronze FS test if I was doing a back sit instead of a regular sit spin. But it's good enough to make its way into my FS program this year.
- I'm having a hard time saving up for AN AND for new boots! Apparently this year there's been two major home maintanance/repairs that cost a lot of money. But I do have enough to make it to AN if I get roommates and keep the cost of hotels/rooms/B&B/etc. under a certain amount. I did get my boots looked at by Harlicks and there are some things they can do to reinforce the skate more until I need to get new boots. So I'm not too worried about getting new skates right now.
- I did compete as a Bronze lady for the VERY FIRST time in November! What an experience skating with a FINE group of Bronze ladies in both the FS and the artistic events. I definitely have a lot more work to do to get my skating to the point where I would be proud as a Bronze lady. But for now, I'm happy to be skating in the same events as them.
- I've been playing with NYC coach's bracket exercise from last year. I should have something to show him this year, though it's not gonna look pretty or smooth. I think he'll be happy with it. (Well, at least he won't give me a hard time about it.) (Side Note: I did show it to him and though it wasn't that great, he was pleased that I actually am trying for them now.)
- And last but certainly not least... well, we'll see. The year hasn't ended yet. So far, I'm staying healthy this year. (Knock on wood.) Pray it STAYS that way!!! (Side Note: Well, that didn't happen. I caught a bad flu that I'm still trying to recover from.)
2008 Goals:
- I still would like to get my loop and flip consistent to the point where I can comfortably land them clean "at will" like I do with my waltz, toe loop and salchow now.
- Lutz: I would like to land these guys at least as often as I do my loop and flip now. I won't count on landing them as consistent as I do with my waltz, toe loop, and salchow, though it would be REAL nice if that were to happen.
- Have a true backspin on a BO edge and not just a fake one where it rocks from a BO and goes into a FI edge.
- Back sit: Lower!!! Lower!!! (And faster with more revs. too!!! And can I please do it from a forward sit change foot to a back sit spin too? )
- Camel: Please let it be strong enough to transition to a camel-sit! Please, pretty please???
- I hope to make some more progress on Silver Moves. But since I'll be working mostly on my getting jumps and spins for my AN programs in the next few months, I think it will likely be in the back burner for 2009. We'll see.
- Make more $$$ so I can continue to afford my lessons, ice time and PT.
- STAY HEALTHY!!!
Random thoughts as I'm working out at the gym this Friday...
On the elliptical trainer:
- "Geez, its' taking me longer to warm up! Turning 40 is THAT bad!?!?! =:-O" (at the 5 minute mark)
- "Geez, it's nowhere near the target heart rate!!!" (At the 34:07 mark and I'm aiming for 155-156 bpm on the heart rate and I'm at 148 bpm...nowhere near there.)
- "Macho, macho MAN!!! I want to be a macho man..." (from the Village People. Yes, this is on my iPod when I do exercises that reminds me of all the macho men out there on the gym floor pumping away at the weights.)
As I'm doing my tougher exercises:
- "Risin' up... straight to the top. Had the guts, got the glory..." (iPod again... it's from "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. If you have watched the old Rocky movie w/Sly Stallone, you'll see him boxing in the ring with his trainer, jumping rope, drinking a raw egg, etc.... all that to prepare for the ring and the big fight. This makes me feel like Rocky preparing for my big fight.)
- "Oh, geez! Now I'm really feeling my age!!!" (as I'm realizing how tired I am after the workout and this workout I had today is "my LIGHT workout day.")
And yes, as you can imagine, there's a lot of "macho men" exercise music in my iPod. (Music from the Rocky movies seems to help me.) I find it funny when I am getting in my "macho man mode" to exercise b/c I obviously don't look ANYTHING like a macho man. (In fact, I find it to be downright funny to play the part of a macho man pumping.) But... whatever works to get me thru the workout!!! LOL!!!

LUTZ!!! LUTZ!!! LUTZ!!! (Well sorta, kinda!!!)
My primary coach went thru all my tougher jumps just to see where they're at. They're CLEAN landings!!! Loop - check. Loop-loop - Check! Flip - Check!!! Then I tried for a lutz and though it's kinda wimpy and the entry is probably more a flutz than a lutz... the landing was clean! Primary coach says "Hmmmm? That's not a bad attempt at all!!! We'll have to work on it more but....looks like you're starting to get a lutz too!!!" WOO HOO!!! (I have to clean up the entry a bit so it's really a lutz and not a flutz...)
Training to Adult Nationals for 1/16/2007
First thing, Happy New Year to everyone!!!
Now... on to the good stuff...
My weight is now somewhere between 120 and 123lbs, which is still normal but I think now is a good time to start increasing my caloric and particularly my protein intake. The goal with my personal trainers this year is to build muscle and I need the carbs for the energy and the protein to repair the muscle. One of my personal trainer is a ballet dancer and I will have him work me more on dance position stuff and just "being aware of my body position so I won't have to rely on the mirror or plexi-glass to check on my body position. This will be a major undertaking for me since I'm definitely weak in this area. The other personal trainer is a figure skater herself and will work more on off ice training and overall strength stuff relevant to skating. (She wants to build up my upper body!!! She thinks my legs are very strong. She's, of course, right!!! I have NO upper body strength to speak off. LOL!!!)
I was training during the holiday "break" (from my real job as a software engineer...) at Peak Performance Fitness Center in Manhattan (where I was initiated in by pushing a 95 lb Prowler and pulled an equally heavy weighted sled...LOL!!!) and at Chelsea Piers with my wonderful NYC ice skating coach, Emanuele. This year in particularly, Emanuele, with his charm, infinite wisdom, patience, creative thought, care, managed to help me strive for a nice low sit spin (not the "adult" one I have but a much lower on that the kids would go "OOOOOOH!!!" about since it's coming from a middle aged lady!) a process to get me to get into a good jump position on pretty much all my jumps and pretty much all but fixed my toe-waltz problem on the toe loop and gave me at least a "barely" toe loop. (It's technically correct, but it's quite a wimpy small jump!!!)
My one accomplishment this week and last week.
Last week, I've managed not only a double run-thru, but a CLEAN double runthru where the only thing that went wrong was that I was a bit sluggish towards the end and I had to end after the music. Otherwise, ALL my elements were there and all my jumps (including the loop and the flip) were cleanly landed. I'll work on the beginning parts that just got changed around, so it will be better the next time around and I will end with the music! LOL!!!
This week (Wednesday, in fact) I managed even the impossible... I actually did a loop-loop IN the program runthru! I managed it under fear of my secondary coach starting the program again if I missed this jump combo. It's scary b/c EVERYONE in that FS session knows that if she ends the music on the first run-thru that I didn't make the jump and she will start over again and repeat this if I don't land that jump again. THAT fear of humilation is scary enough to take action to do all possible to make me land this jump clean!!! LOL!!! (It was also scary enough that I wanted to skip my lesson for this week, in fact!!! But I figured if I skip this week, I will eventually have to face this fear anyway! Better sooner than later, right?) Again, I ended after the music ended, BUT I did land the flip clean again!!! (WOW!!! The flip was a surprise as well! It was not expected from my coaches!!! Just a challenge for myself to see if I could do it.)
I am also playing around with the lutz. They are "flutzes" right now (BOOOOO!!!) but I'm starting to get more clean landings on those too! (I managed 3 clean lutzes at a recent lesson with my primary coach, in fact!!!)
I want to take the opportunity to wish Johnny Weir the best in reclaiming his US Nationals title, Rohene Ward to finally hold it together thru both programs and show us the beautiful skater that I saw at Caberet On Ice both years that he was here in San Francisco for. He's a remarkable and humble young man and I enjoy watching him skate. Last, but CERTAINLY not least, I hope that the people in TV land will finally show Braden Overett on TV, especially his "Pirates" Free Skate Program. I first saw this program at Skate San Francisco 2006 and I've instantly became a fan of his at that moment. It's time for him to get the TV time and the recognition!!! He's EARNED it!!! (Plus I love reading his blog. It's fun reading about the perspective of someone preparing to go to US Nationals -- mental, physical, etc. A lot of it, I can related as a fellow skater also preparing for my own (Adult) Nationals!)

Another reason to be thankful for my nutritionist!!!
I got my new cholesterol reading!
My old numbers as of 8/2/2006 (I was probably about 137-9 lbs at that time.)
Cholesterol: 203
Triglycerides: 99
HDL: 64
LDL: 134
For the last few months (about 3 months now), I've been on a diet of sorts... well, not a diet... I went to a nutritionist and we worked together a food plan that I can stick with. Anyway, THIS is my new cholesterol after I lost a ton of weight (about 13lbs according to my GP... I'm now at about 123-125lbs.) The blood test was done 11/15/2007. I got my results just yesterday! :-)
Cholesterol: 172
Triglycerides: 30
HDL: 63
LDL: 90
(Please pick up your jaw after yourself... ;-) )
My GP was quite surprised when he saw the numbers too... especially since he knows that he did NOT prescribe me ANY meds to deal with the cholesterol! Needless to say, he asked for my nutritionist's business card and he's gonna send his clients there. I had hoped for a drop in the numbers to avoid having to go to the next step to take the cholesterol meds. (I hate taking meds, PERIOD!!!) But I didn't expect THIS much of a drop!!!
I'm so thankful for my nutritionist! She gave me the tools that essentially made my life a LOT easier in the end. She's gonna be THRILLED when she sees the new numbers!!! :-) I look better than I did a couple of years ago and I'm not exactly a spring chicken either! I feel better too! Of course, I'm not gonna go and race against some kid in their mid-20's... (well, maybe I can if s/he's out of shape...) but I'll give them a run for their money.

Loop Brain Fart
Okay, this is bad! I had a lesson today on my loop jump and my secondary coach claims that this is probably my second best jump (next to the waltz jump.)
Problem is... I don't believe it! My consistency for landing this jump clean has been about 50-50. It's pretty much a mental thing! Partly it's an energy thing. (i.e. I have to go into my lessons awake for one and we all know I'm NOT a morning person! LOL!!!) Partly it depends on whether or not my lower back is acting up again. But my biggest one is fear. If I go into it too quickly, my chances of making that jump is zip. I freak out. My secondary coach's response to this today is.... "Get over it!!!" (Figures!!! But a very true statement.)
I probably will not skate much this week (aside from hanging out with skating friends this weekend that are visiting. It will just be low stress and having a bit of fun.) But I need the rest!!! I need sleep badly!!!
Light at the end of the tunnel for another skill or two: Brackets are starting to come along. If I keep at it, my NYC coach will actually SEE brackets come Christmas time when I do finally see him again. And OH!!! My show stop is also coming along too! There's hope for my artistic program yet! I might actually LOOK like a show skater for once!!! LOL!!!

Bronze Debut at Skate San Francisco and catching up
It's long overdue for a post! :-)
I made my Adult Bronze Ladies debut just 3 days short of my 40th birthday!!! (EEEEK!!! Scary to admit that I'm that old!!!) It was a fun experience!!! I have two new programs (artistic and technical), two new skating dress and a LOT of makeup and hair spray. Double EEEEK!!! Along with travel cost to Lake Placid for Adult Nationals -- it's gonna cost me a fortune this year!!!) :-(
Anyway, it was a BLAST!!! I had a wonderful time competing with my fellow Adult Bronze Ladies skaters at both the technical and artistic event! It also helps that I would be competing with friends too!
Pictures: Technical Artistic
Video: Artistic
Part of the reason why it took me this long from when I passed my Bronze FS test to compete now is b/c I've been working on my jumps and spins. Since my last post, I have been landing both the loop and the flip jump clean about 50-50 times. My secondary coach has been reworking my entry to the flip so I wouldn't "toe turn" to get the rotation. (I still got the bruises from being on the harness last week b/c of this. OWWWW!!! I hope that no one thinks I'm being physically abused or something...LOL!!!) I tried out the entry this past Sunday and it's feeling better already. :-)
She also said my loops are pretty decent, but I gotta deal with my "brain freeze" on my entry to the loop at speed. I have yet to land that loop jump during my runthru on the program, but I can land them usually when I'm just doing it in isolation. Since the music is kinda fast, it seems to "rush" my brain for some reason.
I have a backsit to play around with now and trying to get lower. My camel is STILL non-existent since my free leg isn't high enough and my torso isn't low enough yet on the spin.
As for my primary coach, he's doing a quickie assessment of all my spins and jumps and seeing what needs to be worked on. Yes, my technical isn't strong at all for Bronze. I need to land those loop and flip jumps clean, get my lutz, sit lower on the backsit, get my camel...yadda yadda yadda.... (Translation: tell me something I don't already know...*rolleyes*)
So back to work! As my primary coach says whenever I say hello to friends at the rink on the ice at our Monday night public session: "Less talking, more skating..." *evil stare*
Other things:
Well, I had a blood test done back two summers ago b/c of a fall I took on the stairs a while back. Well, I'm glad to say it's not from a lack of iron or something weird in the blood. I think it's just plain heat exhuastion. (It was rather WARM that day!) BUT... my doctor did find a brand new problem... my cholestorol was borderline high. (203 and LDL was at 134!) Did everything I can to eliminate foods with high cholestorol (I miss my shellfish!!! :-( ) ... and now I'm under doctor and dietitian supervision to lose weight to see if that lowers my score a bit. Getting close to my goal of 123 lbs (from 139!!!) (I'm at 126lbs now!) I hope that cholestorol number will go down too!!!

Skating goals for 2007 and other matters
Skating goals for 2007:
* Land a loop consistently!!!
* Land a flip consistently!!!
* Get a lutz!!!
* Get a good camel spin and MAYBE a camel-sit.
* Skate FASTER and prettier!!!
* Skate with more CONFIDENCE!!! The fear factor is starting to crack a bit. I'm not as afraid on falls, but I got a ways to go to finally conquer that fear.
* STAY HEALTHY
* Start on Silver Moves
* Get a good start on back sit
* STAY HEALTHY
* SAVE $$$ for AN. I don't know which one. I'm hoping for Chicago, but it's likely I'll end up going to whichever one is in 2008. (I hope it's at Ice House at Hackensack, NJ!)
* SAVE $$$ for new boots. My purple ones are getting old and I may or may not get new ones. I might just fill in the tougue to get a bit more support in 2007, but I definitely need to start saving for new purple boots.
* And did I mentioned STAY HEALTHY??? :-P
Other Matters:
One of them is that I had a curiousity to take up ice dancing to improve on my FS skills. The big surprise for me is that primary coach was totally AGAINST it. Secondary coach was originally all for it but had a third coach in mind for me and added that she wants this third coach to "motivate me to get more speed by pulling me along." But after she found out that primary coach was not happy about my wanting to take ice dancing, she dropped the idea and told me to not pursue the third coach. (Well, she was sorta for it. She only wanted me to work on speed, flow, edge quality stuff and not on learning patterns, which is exactly what I wanted to do!) So juggling between the two of them ended up being a "soap opera" in itself. I ended up abandoning the effort. *rolleyes*
So why is Primary coach is against it? One reason is that he has tried out ice dancing and had a bad experience with it. Another reason is that he was upset that secondary coach did NOT talk to him about my going to a third coach, especially since he's "perfectly capable of doing the task she wants the third coach to do." (He then demonstrated how "perfectly capable of doing the task" he was. YIIIIIKE!!!! =:-O )
The other concern he had was that he really, REALLY wanted me to start getting those jumps and spins. He does NOT want me to be distracted by working on other things other than getting those jumps and spins. Needless to say, I'm NOT happy with what he wanted me to do b/c I do NOT want to lose the skills that I've worked so hard to gain for Bronze Moves. I want to continue with the momentum and if anything, push for even MORE speed and flow!
The other problem is setting goals. I ended up writing down the goals that I want to accomplish. Even though I'm glad I got the list down, the timing for writing this list of goals was REALLY BAD b/c I had health (flu), work and family (as in my upcoming trip to NYC) obligations to deal with.
Given that, if I were lucky to score a lesson with Moves Guru in Hackensack (doubtful from what he's been telling me), it's looking like he will be put into doing jumps and spins instead. (Though I hear he's also really good with spins so I have some use for him for that... ;-) ) If I don't get a lesson with Moves Guru, though I would be sad that I won't get to see him this year, it's not going to be as much of a disaster as it was last year when I was preparing for a Moves test!
That said, my concentration is on getting a couple of lessons with Emanuele and do my get-together. But if I get a lesson with Edward as well, it would be great! We'll see.

We'll see.

A Very "Bronzed" Birthday! :-D
(Note: I wrote variants of this post on RSSIR, CAS and skatingforums on my birthday, which was two days ago...)
Okay, I'm not just here to toot about my 39th birthday today! I'm here b/c I've been keeping a secret from most of the people on this board and other boards, but now I can let the cat out of the bag! :-D
This morning at around 7am PST (and right on my birthday too!!!), I took my Bronze FS test and PASSED!!! I have been quiet on just about all the boards I usually have been on b/c I wanted to concentrate on getting this test done and not stress over it. Passed with all three judges too (barely though... EEEEK!!! ) I currently don't have the forms right here with me. (I asked to have it copied and sent to me this time.) I got lots of feedback and I know what I still need to work on.
Primary coach tells me that I passed by coming up to me with the forms and yelling "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" I said excitedly "I PASSED?!?!?! " He said "You passed!" I yelled "HOLY S***!!! OMG!!! " (And then realizing that someone else was stepping out to test and I have kids around! Oops!!! *blush*) But what a wonderful, WONDERFUL birthday gift I got today!!! Thank you, Skate Gods!!! *bowing to Skate Gods*
And to boot, primary coach is very happy b/c he got all three of his students testing...and passing... thru a combination of FIVE tests (both moves and FS in the case of his other two students.) It's a VERY, VERY good day for the primary coach, lemme tell 'ya!!! GO "TEAM JKo!!!" :-D
I also want to take this time to thank my net friends on all the boards I'm on!!! You guys are all GREAT!!! Also, thank you to all my coaches (past, present AND holiday) for making me work and believing in me even though I didn't believed in myself enough that I would ever see this day!!! Thank you soooo much for putting up with me trying to get thru the journey to finally be eligible to go to Adults National! :-)
Okay, now that I've got everything out of the way....
I'M GOING TO ADULTS NATIONAL!!! I'M GOING TO ADULTS NATIONAL!!! YAAAAHOOO!!! WOOOOO HOOOO!!! :-D :-D :-D
(Now crashing onto bed from lack of sleep b/c of nerves this morning...)

Passed Bronze Moves! OMG!!!
I am still recovering from the shock that I've finally defeated this monster of a Moves test this morning!!! OMG!!! OVER FOUR YEARS in the making!!! It's SUCH A HUGE MONKEY off my shoulders and believe it, I'm very thankful this particular test is done! When I found out I passed this test, I CRIED on my test forms!!! It was an overwhelming experience, lemme tell 'ya!!!
Next test up is Bronze FS... I have no clue when I'm testing this one, though if it were up to my primary coach, it would be at the next test session!!! *rolleyes*
Additional nots: Motto for my test session today: "SKATE B****!!!!" *evil grin* (A quote from one of the other coaches at my rink... he was trying to get me to skate angry enough to get some speed! God love him for his chutzpah!!! LOL!!!)
Primary coach's way of congratulating me "You better be jumping tomorrow! You're testing Bronze FS in September!!!" (Me: "Ummmm... don't I need a consistent THIRD single jump first???" =:-O )
The notes below are my test notes for this test session! Enjoy reading it! Those of you reading this and working on Bronze Moves, I hope this helps you to prepare for your test! :-D
Time to collapse in a heap somewhere...
========
Well, no surprises here!!! The butterflies in my stomach were definitely going full force here!!! I was skating "angry" on the first, second and fourth move. I didn't expect to pass on the power 3's. They were sucky to start and we all knew that going into the test and I concentrated on the first, second and fourth move to make up for it. 5 step mohawk was the wildcard move for me.
I had no retries to do!!!
Forward Perimeter Crossovers:
No surprises here! I had trouble during the warm up... and I really needed to slow down long enough to watch out for those toe pushes...
Judge 1: 2.5 - nice speed but steppy and toe pushes. Good extensions, but POINT YOUR TOES!!!
Judge 2: 2.5 - maintained flow throughout; extension fine; watch out for toe pushing; work on push under
Judge 3: 2.6 - maintained flow and power; extension OK
Back Perimeter Crossovers:
The "some flat edges on strokes" is partly b/c I was dealing with the ditch! The knee bend part is the part I'm concerned about... since in practice it wasn't that bad...
Judge 1: 2.5 - Again, excellent speed for level. Need to push through more. More knee bend and get off those toe picks!!!
Judge 2: 2.4 - Would like to see more knee bend, sit back more on blade to get less toe scraping.
Judge 3: 2.5 - maintained flow and generated power throughout; some flat edges on strokes
Forward Power 3-turns:
Yeah, yeah! I know this moves for me SUCKS!!! Almost killed myself on the 2nd half of the move! NEXT!!!
Judge 1: 2.4 - Good power/flow for level. Turn is OK - not on toe but back edges on toe/ leaning forward too much
Judge 2: 2.4 - Cautious, need stronger push and edge into 3 turns
Judge 3: 2.4 - Flow OK, Shallow lobes, on toes on 2nd half
Alt Back Crossovers to BO Edges:
VERY VERY happy about this move! Jay said it was my BEST move out of this test!!! It's a bit slow for me, but as long as I kept the flow, I was happy!
Judge 1: 2.6 - Good speed/flow -> NOW you are NOT on toes!!! GOOD!!! BUT POINT TOE on free leg!!!
Judge 2: 2.5 - Maintained flow throughout, some scratchy on crossovers. Extension good
Judge 3: 2.6 - maintained flow and power; good ice coverage; good upper body control
5 step mohawks:
This was the wild card move... but thankfully I focused on the other moves to make up for this one! I needed it!!! I concentrated on KICKING thru the extensions!!! But I still have to work on those nasty mohawks!!! But WHEW, I got a passing mark from Judge 1!
Judge 1: 2.5 - Excellent lobes -> Scratchy on mohawk. Don't look down!!! POINT TOES!! Good speed.
Judge 2: 2.4 - edge quality of step 3, 4 and 5 OK Extension OK. Need to work on smoother transition in mohawks
Judge 3: 2.4 - Maintained flow & control; Some MOH hopped; Extension OK
Overall Total:
Judge 1: 12.5
Judge 2: 12.2
Judge 3: 12.5
Passing average: 2.5
Passing total: 12.5

Testing this Saturday...
Well, the good news, I'm on the test schedule for this coming Saturday and I'm the very first testing coming off the test session. So I'll have a chance to finally be rid of the Bronze Moves test once and for all!!!
Bad news... the test rink has been having problems with a ditch that's at least an inch deep and 2 inch wide and at least a quarter of the rink in length. How is ANYONE gonna test with THAT!?!!? =:-O

Took another tumble... :(
Last Tuesday I took a rather nasty fall down 4 steps of stairs at my office. Thank goodness the fall happened on a carpeted and well padded stair well. Nothing much was damaged besides a fat lip (which was temporary), rug burns (on the nose and lip), sore front tooth (but tooth were not knocked loose), bruise on the thigh, and a very shaken nerves!
The bad part though, is that I don't remember much of the fall. I mean I remember going down the stairs like I normally do. But I don't remember missing the steps and I don't remember any of the fall other than my hitting my face. I've been having major woozy spells just prior to the accident. (Probably just heat exhaustion, but I'm also getting my blood check out for stuff that might make me faint.) I had my EKG and blood pressure check and that's fine!
I should know more by next week. But right now, the only thing left of the accident are scars from the rug burn and still sore (but not as much) tooth.
Nothing is keeping me from skating though. I've already gone back twice and am skating as steadily as I've always have.
